What it is
Write, Pair, Share is a short structured exercise. Everyone writes alone first, then discusses in pairs, then shares with the group. It protects quiet and junior voices and stops the first confident speaker from setting the tone.
When to use it
When some voices dominate, when seniority is in the room, or when you need many views fast.
When to skip it
When the group is under four people and already speaks freely.
How to run it
- 3 minState one question. Everyone writes answers alone on notes, one idea per note.
- 7 minPair up. Compare, combine, and pick the best two ideas between you.
- 10 minEach pair shares. Cluster as you go, with no debate yet.
About 20 minutes of method time. Add ten to fifteen minutes to open and close the session.
What to watch for
Letting the senior person speak first in the share. Skipping the silent writing.
The AI lens
Use it to ask: where do you already use AI informally, and what do you not say out loud about it?
What you leave with
A set of ideas from every voice, clustered, with no single person shaping the result.
An example
Before a discussion about AI in finance operations, thirty people each write privately what they already do with AI tools. The honest picture appears without anyone having to confess in front of their manager.
How it compares
Use Write, Pair, Share to open up a group. Use a Structured Brainstorm when the aim is to generate and build on ideas.
